In this presentation, I use my creative project East Beijing Road as an example to examine how to utilize asymmetric VR in storytelling. This VR project combines physical computing and Virtual Reality (VR) to create an asymmetric VR installation with the Unreal game engine in that the audiences inside and outside of VR can interact with each other in the same virtual environment by using different mechanics. Asymmetric VR storytelling is to break the singular virtual space, differentiated from many other VR experiences. I will also discuss the conceptual and technical perspectives of asymmetric VR in expansive storytelling.
